Detailed description of Arcadian Shores Golf Club

Arcadian Shores Golf Club At Myrtle Beach Hilton is a Resort 18 hole golf course located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Arcadian Shores combines the best of mother nature with the best of modern golf layout. This was the very first golf course designed by world-renowned golf architect Rees Jones. The course first opened for play in 1974.

Arcadian Shores was selected as one of the top 100 golf courses in the nation just three years after it opened. Lush bermuda grass greens, with 64 creatively-placed sand bunkers and natural lakes woven in and out of fairways, make this course a challenge. In a 1998 judging, organized by Myrtle Beach Sun News, 24 golf experts voted two holes, #2 and #13 into the Dream 18, a compilation of the best 18 holes on the beach.

Arcadian Shores is a "traditional" layout with natural blend of beauty and challenge. It features big lakes, deviously placed bunkers, tree-lined fairways, Bermuda greens and distinctive contouring. The course sits on leased land and the lease expired a couple of years ago, so the operator, Kingston Plantation, has only been performing token and cosmetic conditioning, which has resulted in bumpy and spotty greens, tired bunkering and overall poorer conditions.

Arcadian Shores Golf Club plays to a par-72. From the back tees the course measures 6,857 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,113 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 16, a par-5 that plays to 557 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 17, a par-3 that plays to 169 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 13, a 408 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Arcadian Shores Golf Club is # 7, a 361 yard par-4.

This round was very nice - the last two holes were rained out - torrential downpour! This is a nice, female-friendly golf course. I enjoyed my day here and will go back.

Would travel: 120-300 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

The staff was very professional, especially the starter. He provides good directions and appropriate warnings on the location of alligator hazards. The course is long and flat. The greens were fast, Bermuda grass in the roughs will practically swallow balls. Water hazards and strategic sand traps (sometimes moats) keep it interesting. It is pricey (look for web deals). It is very convenient to time share locations.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Better courses for less nearby

Played here 5-29-12, as a single walk-on. Got paired up with a local and his guest, so that helped quite a bit: thanks, Ed.

Greens fees are highly negotiable: the course web site says $35 from 0700 to noon, but the walk-up price at the course was $68! Once I told the pro shop guy I'd seen the web price, he charged me that. Moral of that story: check in advance!

The course is relatively old by Myrtle Beach standards, but is a nice design, with plenty of mature trees, some water, and lots and lots of sand, some very creatively sculpted. If you can get through 18 holes without hitting a bunker, you have really done well.

Tee boxes were a little ragged, but fairways were very nice. Greens were not good: very, very slow and bumpy, and many had large burned spots, which I think is odd for this early in the season. By July, they will be unplayable.

Some very sneaky holes, esecially #7, with hidden water lurking behind a large fairway bunker on the right. Do not use the Driver on this hole!

Pace was a little slow for a weekday, and there was no sign of a ranger. No drink cart either. Clubhouse seems nice, but I did not linger. On course staff was very pleasant, and seemed truly interested in making the player welcome. Course was recently taken over by a new management firm, and the "word on the street" is that they plan to close it for a rehab sometime in the near future. This may explain the poor greens conditions today. Overall a nice course, but with the shabby greens, not competitive for the area.

Pace of play was little slow, and the cart paths needed a little work. However the layout and design were great. Fairways were fair but challenging as were the par 3's. I would recommend this to all my friends, the course has made a dramatic comeback from previous experience there. And there were no houses to worry about!!!

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
